Senator Christina Shelton of Oklahoma had just finished her morning briefing with her staff when one of her interns burst into the office, interrupting the meeting, “Senator! I have terrible news!”

Senator Shelton looked up slowly. In her twenty-five years as a senator, it seemed that bad news happened daily. Not much of it was actually bad. She learned early on to make plans and then create contingencies for them. She pulled a pair of glasses off her face, setting them down slowly on top of the notebook in front of her, laying the pen she was holding next to it. All the years of emergencies and interruptions and crises had made her relatively immune to whatever problems her staff brought to her. She folded her hands on top of the conference room table before answering, “Yes? What is it?”

The intern, a junior from Georgetown University who was majoring in political science, like every other one of her interns, spurted out, “It’s Theo Ware. He’s dead!”

Christina stared at the intern for a moment, her face blank. The intern, a young man with a round face and a belly that spoke of too many late nights eating cheeseburgers and drinking beer with his friends stood with his mouth open, his eyes big behind thick glasses and unruly hair. “Theo Ware! You know, the guy that runs the software company that was going to get the contract for the new cybersecurity bill?” The intern ran his hand through his hair, clumps of it sticking up like wild grass, “This is awful! What are we going to do?”

Christina raised her eyebrows. She’d have to pull this intern aside later on and tell him two things — no more drama and to comb his hair. She couldn’t have someone representing her office looking so unkempt and disorganized. It wasn’t good for her reputation. Before saying anything, she swallowed, calculating. Passing the cybersecurity bill was one of the big-ticket items she and her colleagues were working on during this session of Senate. They were just a couple of days away from the vote, the multibillion-dollar contract virtually guaranteed to Theo Ware’s company as well as a stop to all the ransomware attacks that had been plaguing government contractors. Ware’s company had been the forerunner until now, his software one of the few designs they’d seen that could stop ransomware attacks. At least, his had the highest likelihood of being able to do so, given the fact that the hackers seemed to change their tactics as often as she bought new shoes.

Senator Shelton moved slowly, glancing at her Chief of Staff, a thin man who could have been the intern’s older brother except for the fact that he was properly dressed and didn’t have outbursts. “David? Can you please go get Senator Marsh on the line for me and see if there is anything on the news about Mr. Ware?” She glanced around the table at the assortment of staffers, assistants, and interns, all of whom were
